Understandably, it’s all over the news. So-called public enemy number one, and the face of al-Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden, was supposedly killed by United States forces in Pakistan yesterday.
After US President Barack Obama made the announcement, there seemed to be a collective sigh of relief among most of the American people. But there is certainly nothing to celebrate Bin over Laden’s ‘death’.
This incident will certainly deepen an already deteriorating impasse between the West and Islam. Muslims across the world will face plans by Western governments to further restrict their freedom of movement between countries. Conspiracy theorists would claim that the body is not Bin Laden’s, but that of a body double.
President Obama, already facing major problems at home, attacked by political friends and opponents alike over issues like the economy and questions over his birthplace, had probably thought he scored a major victory. However, it may in the long term turn out to be his worst mistake since entering the White House. Whatever the outcome of this, Bin Laden’s footsoldiers may have already put their plans for a sustained global terror campaign into action.
When the first terror attacks happen, we should be afraid…. very afraid….
UPDATE: Some of the conspiracy theorists have started already. A Facebook page has been set up already debunking Bin Laden’s death. Meanwhile, reaction in the media to the news has been nothing short of outrageous.
