There was a lot of (media and political) indignation over the arrest of Conservative MP Damian Green over alleged leaked information given to him by a civil servant. But what was it all about? To most people, this is no more than cheap political point-scoring.
There have been claims and counter-claims about whether Home secretary Jacqui Smith (and Prime Minister Gordon Brown) had ordered the plan to arrest Green (something she denies, of course). This incident may have re-enforced the perception among commentators that the government continues to act in a “Stalinistic” way.
Stalinist? No. Stupid? Yes…..
If the government had been open and honest with the British people over policy in the first place, then civil servants would not have to resort to leaking information to the media.
