Inspired by the worldwide success of High School Musical, ITV has got into the act by creating a (heavily-promoted) local equivalent called Brittania High. Is this the best idea that Britain’s biggest commercial broadcaster can come up with- a blatant local rip-off on the original?
The first episode has yet to be broadcast, but to me it has the word STINKER written all over it. It makes me angry that UK executives feel they have to look abroad for ideas when they could spend a lot more time dealing with the dross that comes on our screens night after night, week after week. Why on earth do the soaps like Coronation Street, EastEnders and Emmerdale have up to four slots a week each? Why do we have the endless adaptations of historical novels? Why is there very little original comedy and drama? Do we need more stupid makeover, reality and talent contest shows?
Unless the powers that be who control our TV puts more effort and investment into original programming, more and more people will continue to use the OFF switch on their TVs.
