The awesome Williams sisters served a double triumph at Wimbledon yesterday…. yet all the British media could talk about was Laura Robson. She was on both the front and back of most of the newspapers and given a mention on the TV too… yet she is only 14 years old.
Robson, from South London, became the first British player since Annabel Croft in 1984 (a long, long, long, long, long time in British tennis) to win the Junior Wimbledon championship, beating the No3 seed Noppawan Lertcheewakern of Thailand 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Why did the achievement of Robson, worthy as it was, get a better mention than the victories of the almost unstoppable Williams’? It’s completely unfair that they still have to prove to the British public that they are great tennis players.
Or, in the eyes of some conspiracy theorists:
“Is it because they’es black?”
