I was wrong…. Barack Obama will certainly have the Democratic Party’s nomination in the forthcoming US presidential election. It was arguably a very bitter and hard-fought contest between Obama and his main opponent, former First Lady, Hillary Clinton.
These contests, where each candidate are allowed to put forward their own ideas on how to change the US, has put the toxic and depressing atmosphere of British politics to shame. Many commentators look in amazement at how the US system can inspire millions of their own people to strive for something better in their society.
Obama has surprised everybody by his sheer staying power. He may be black, but that hasn’t stopped him going further than many have tried before him. The more famous Clinton, in a different time, would have beaten him handsomely, but she was unable to bring enough support to win the nomination.
Obama has the biggest hurdle yet to come…. and that’s the contest against his Republican opponent John McCain later this year. Many in the US are desperate to put an end to the politics of the Bush regime. They will hope that Obama can do it.
