There are so many problems in the world at the moment…. earlier this month, a devastating cyclone hit the southern areas of Burma, leaving 78,000 people officially dead… on Monday, a deadly earthquake hit south western China, killing 22,000 people and leaving around five million homeless….
Yet, most of the attention in the UK press were focused on the former First Lady Cherie Blair publishing her political memoirs, which have already attracted criticism from many public figures. She also got a stinging attack from Judge Gerald Butler, who said that her remarks made in her book were ‘not appropriate’. He also said:
“If she wants to tread this path of making outrageous comments it’s up to her, but I don’t think this is a job for a judge…. It shows a complete lack of decency.”
Mrs Blair deserves a lot of credit for having a sucessful career while being a good mother to her four children. The last thing she would want to be known for is being a ‘nice wife’ who often keeps her mouth shut. But she is putting her reputation on the line for publishing allegations against her fellow Labour party members and MPs at a time when the government is in trouble. As I wrote before, I don’t think there is any need for public figures, particularly politicians, to air their private opinions in the open, even if they have been about situations that have been happened long ago. Many commentators who hated Mrs Blair during her time at No10 will use her book as an excuse to have a go at her again.
