Premiership football club Newcastle United are the latest team to look for a new manager after the dismissal of ex-Bolton boss Sam Allardyce. Whoever takes up the post will have to live up to expectations of both the current owners and the long-suffering but loyal fans, who have not seen their team win any silverware for nearly half a century.
Let’s be honest, which current manager in their right mind would want to take up such a position? After all former favourite Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp rejected it, and many others (Mark Hughes of Blackburn Rovers is the pundits’ favourite) may look at the situation and would think twice before putting pen to paper.
To make things worse, Kevin Keegan is being quoted as considering coming back to St James’ Park, even though he seemed to rule out a possibility of returning to management in an interview with the BBC a few months ago.
So, a big club, with a huge fan base, sellouts at their home ground every other week…except that the club in question is Newcastle United, and whoever takes over as manager will have to start pleasing the famous Toon Army very quickly….
UPDATE! Kevin Keegan to return as Newcastle boss. He was manager from 1992-1997
