Iraq is about to be invaded again, but this time, not from either the United States or Britain… but from neighbouring Turkey.
Politicians from their parliament voted yesterday by 507 votes to 19 in favour of cross-border military raids into Northern Iraq to attack the minority Kurdish population, whose rebel leaders have been fighting for an independent state, despite pleas for restraint by the Iraqi government.
This would become a huge nightmare for the US and Britain. A sustained campaign by Turkey would put diplomatic relations under severe strain, at a time when they are struggling to get to grips with the problems they’ve caused in the rest of Iraq.
For the Kurdish people, who suffered badly under Saddam’s regime, it would be a disaster. This could light a fuse for an even wider war…. and that’s very bad news.
