So…. The Liberal Democrats have dumped a second leader in two years.
Sir Menzies Campbell stood down as party leader last night. There had been questions in recent months over his ability to head the party. He had only been at the top for around 18 months.
This is a disaster for British politics. At a time when Labour and the Conservatives have both been speaking from the same hymn sheet (or is it sh*t?), the country desperately needs an alternative voice. The Lib Dems, until recently, have been successful in taking protest votes from both the other parties, and have been very principled in putting forward policies. Now they are losing ground, and in some cases, they seem close to imploding.
Whoever becomes their new leader must stop the internal bitching and backstabbing which threatens the party’s very future.
