Man Utd footballer in £80million transfer

Manchester United have accepted a bid from Real Madrid for their player Cristiano Ronaldo.

EIGHTY MILLION! He’s a great player, and will be rewarded financially by the deal, but he’s simply not worth that much. It’s ridiculous that some largers clubs can ‘flash the cash’ to get their man while there are others who are suffering financially or facing extinction. Surely it is time for football to follow the example of other sports and introduce a salary cap.

Labour crushed in Euro polls

Just when the Labour government thought things couldn’t get any worse, they did… spectacularly.

In the elections to the European Parliament, Labour’s share of the vote fell to around 15 per cent, their worse performance in years. The Conservatives were the main winners, as well as the other centre-right parties across Europe, finishing on 28 per cent. The United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) finished ahead of Labour with around 17 per cent of the vote, while the Liberal Democrats finished on 13 per cent. As I predicted, the British National Party got their big breakthrough, finishing on 6 per cent overall, and gaining two seats.

For the moment, it seems that both Gordon Brown, and Labour, will want to hold on. But in a space of two days, the people have given them the finger, and have demanded a change. Now is the time to take the hint. Go now!

Another piece of British manufacturing bites the dust…..

While the Labour government ministers were so busy ripping each other apart, in the real world, another piece of what was left of UK manufacturing was ripped apart this week.

LDV , the Birmingham-based van maker, has gone into administration, certainly meaning that the majority of its workforce, from the van making side to its suppliers and dealerships, will almost certainly lose their jobs.

Where was the government when they needed them? As usual, nowhere to be seen…. they certainly do not care about the state of manufacturing in this country.

Setanta could face closure

Well, it had to happen. By the end of the week, Setanta, the company which tried to take on the dominant British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) for sports broadcasting rights now faces calling in the receivers, according to media reports.

It’s not just the fact that the company’s backers have overreached themselves over sports rights without asking themselves how they were going to pay their dues. As I have previously mentioned, here, here, here, and here, the way they broadcast sports events are a complete shambles. Also, their business model were based on projections that were hopelessly optimistic.

Sports fans have already been short-changed by Setanta. It’s time for them to hand over the contracts to Sky, and walk away. Now.

England lose to minnows in cricket- so what's new?

England‘s professional cricketers were beaten by one run by Holland‘s part-timers in their ICC World Twenty20 opening match.

It was bad enough for England to lose the game they really should have won, but, at the end of the day, they really underestimated their opponents. Paul Collingwood, England captain for the tournament, admitted that:

“It hurts, I expect it to hurt, we have been beaten fair and square by a team better than us on the night.”

Well, it will hurt even more if they beaten by their next opponents Pakistan on Sunday, which would effectively end their interest in the tournament.
