Now that we have finally seen the back of George W Bush, the new President Barack Obama had made a blistering start by ordering plans to close the notorious Guantanamo Bay prison within one year.

This prison has long been a massive boil in American politics of recent times and it needed to be lanced. It may not halt the threat of more terrorist outrages in the west immediately, but it could herald the start of  the cooling of tensions between the Muslim and the Western worlds. This should also see the end of this so-called war on terror, which many people now see in hindsight as a flawed political strategy.

The world is now resting on your shoulders, Mr President. Do not waste it like Bush did.
