Radio Prank: A mountain out of a molehill

Russell Brand quits his radio show, Jonathan Ross is suspended, and the controller of BBC’s Radio2 Lesley Douglas resigns her position. The Corporation’s detractors have a field day. All this over-the-top reaction over a radio prank.

When the crap hit the fan, both Brand and Ross apologised. But should an experienced radio controller be forced from her job over this minor episode? Compare this to the major misdemeanors both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown did in our name, particularly over the Iraq war and the credit crunch, yet they are remain political ‘statesmen’. This story is a accurate reflection of what’s wrong with Britain today.

The BBC did make a mistake, but this mistake could cost them- and us, the licence-fee payers- a lot more in the future. No wonder many rival media executives…. and politicians…. want to cut it down to size. Surely it is in the public interest that we should fight to protect one of Britain’s rare treasures from outside interference.
