Today’s by-election in the Scottish constituency of Glasgow East (caused by the resignation of David Marshall through ill-health) could signal the beginning of the end for both the Labour government and Gordon Brown as Prime Minister.
Their rivals in the by-election, the Scottish National Party, are favourites to take this once safe seat. Labour’s campaign has been dogged by the fact that the original candidate picked by the local party decided to pull out. Many other Labour members had decided it wasn’t worth the bother. Their hapless candidate, Margaret Curran, will do well to even get a decent number of votes.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown is set to be told more bad news…. and when it comes, the pressure on him from within Labour to resign will become even louder.
