Are there any answers to violence among teenagers?

In the wake of yet another highly publicised teen murder, ‘Channel 4′ is showing a week-long season of programmes this week under the title, ‘Disarming Britain’.

The highlight of the season is the Street Weapons Commission, which is made up of an independent panel headed by Cherie Booth. They toured the country to find out why so many young people carry knives and guns. They present a show every day until Thursday, rounded off with a live TV debate on Sunday.

In London alone last year, 27 teenagers were killed through violence. Already in the six months this year, there have been 17, a level that could exceed last year’s total. With every death, there is public pressure on both the government and the police to take decisive action.

My question is- why is Ms Booth chairing the commission? Isn’t the fact that we have so much teen violence is the result of the policies that her husband imposed on this country… with disastrous consequences?

Spain wins 'Euro 2008'- well deserved

Congratulations to Spain for beating Germany to win the European Football Championship…. and well done especially, to Fernando Torres, who scored the only goal in a game where , on the balance of play, there was only one team in it. Their present squad, full of talented players who gelled well together throughout, can only get better.

There is a lot in the tournament that England’s players can learn from… if they had bothered to watch it on TV.

Fifth place -FIFTH PLACE!!!!

Yep, you’ve guessed it, Labour’s candidate in the Henley by-election scored a miserable three per cent of the vote. The Tories won, but Labour finished fifth- behind the Lib Dems, the Greens….. and the British National Party. To make things worse on Gordon Brown’s first anniversary since becoming Prime Minister, a Scottish Labour MP resigns his seat through ill-health, meaning that more electoral woe lies in wait for him. The country can hardly wait.

Gordon Brown, PM, one year on

I still cannot believe that a year ago, Gordon Brown was appointed Prime Minister without an electoral mandate from either the Labour party or the British people …. and judging by his performance so far, he has been a complete disaster! Within twelve months, he has put himself and the United Kingdom in disrepute.

IT’S TIME FOR HIM…. AND LABOUR…TO GO!!

Zimbabwe in crisis as opposition leader quits

Morgan Tsvangirai, the leader of Zimbabwe’s opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change, has pulled out of the run-off for the country’s presidency.

We in the MDC have resolved that we will no longer participate in this violent illegitimate sham of an election process.

“The courageous people of Zimbabwe, and the people of the MDC, have done everything humanely and democratically possible to deliver a new Zimbabwe and a new government.

“Conditions as of today do not permit the holding of a credible poll. Given the totality of these circumstances, we believe a credible poll is impossible.

“We in the MDC cannot ask [people] to cast their votes on the 27th [June] when that vote would cost them their lives.

“On 27 June Mugabe has declared war, and we will not be part of that war.

“Our victory is certain, but it can only be delayed.”

We in Britain are lucky that we can say what we like about Prime Minister Gordon Brown. We can criticise him, and if we don’t like his policies, we can get rid of him in an election. However, the people of Zimbabwe do not at present have the same option. Enough said.
