ID policy attacked… again
The government’s plans to force people to have and identity card have been dealt another blow. An official report showed that the system could expose the poorest people in the UK to the risk of fraud, and that implementation is being hampered by ministers failing to work with each other, according to The Guardian.
The report was published by the Independent Scheme Assurance Panel, whose chairman is Alan Hughes, non-executive director of the Identity and Passport Service. He said:
“The integrity of the scheme and trust in it are essential, yet it will never be free of errors…. Public trust in the scheme will be dependent on the protections within the scheme from misuse of personal data and the diligence with which mistakes are corrected.”
Are we expected to trust a government that has been responsible for the loss of personal data of benefit claimants? Are we expected to trust a government that has over the last eleven years, eroded many of Britain’s basic human rights? Can ministers, who are already in the brown stuff over the NHS IT project which is billions overspent and has been delayed by four years, be trusted to control the waste of more public money being spent on a scheme which has been criticised by independent experts and is seen to be flawed from day one?
As usual, ministers will read it…. then they will ignore it and carry on what they have been doing. They will do so at their peril….
