A few months ago, A young British girl, Madeleine McCann, disappeared while on a family holiday. Since then, there has been almost blanket wall-to-wall coverage over the incident.
The girl’s family has understandibly seen their world turned upside down. What’s making an already unbearable situation worse was the fact that the British press got involved, and soon what supposed to be a straightforward search for the girl turned into a media monster that had almost become out of control.
The Portuguese police have been subject to the most hurtful, and sometimes racist criticism, for sometimes failing to give them information about the missing girl. There also have been rumours that she had been kidnapped and taken out of the country. Several so-called sightings in other places turned out to be incorrect.
Something as tragic as this always bring out the worst of the conspiracy theorists, who would like to say that the parents had allegedly killed her all along, despite the lack of evidence so far. Now it seems that both the girl’s parents, and some members of her immediate family have been made suspects by the police, but have yet to be charged with any offence.
It would be better for all concerned if the McCann family are allowed to deal with their situation with dignity, the media to stop intruding, and the Portuguese police be allowed to search for the young girl unhindered by any obstacles, verbal or otherwise.
